What is a Podcast?
A podcast is a collection of digital files which are published over the Internet. Usually these files are audio or video, but they can also be images or text. The power of a podcast is that instead of you having to go find the set of files on the Internet, or remember to check back time and time again to see if there is any new content, the file comes to you when you subscribe to something called a podcast "feed".
These feeds are files that a program (such as iTunes) or website (such as my.yahoo.com) can use to determine which collections you'd like to keep track of. Whenever new content is uploaded to the Internet, the program downloads it to your computer for you. You can listen to the file at your leisure on your computer, or the program can automatically load it onto a portable music player so that you can take your audio or video subscription with you.
There are many different options for subscribing to podcasts. iTunes (http://www.apple.com/itunes/) is a very popular program that allows you to subscribe, listen, and download the file to a portable music player all in one application, but there are over a dozen other choices.
Podcasting is a low-cost, high-tech way of providing creative content. Intended audiences range from being international in scope to so highly specific that less than a dozen people would ever subscribe. Styles range from professional quality to extremely amateur, and the range and diversity of subject matter far exceeds commercial radio or television.
